Following up from last week, Derek Linney, KPMG Crimsonwing’s Solutions Director, spoke at the Figaro Digital eCommerce Seminar in London on the changes taking place in the eCommerce landscape and how retailers need to prepare from a technical, analytic and a management perspective.

With the ever expanding world of eCommerce, retailers are constantly facing new challenges, including integrating their eCommerce sites with social aspects of the web, private sites and mCommerce. Due to the increased popularity of smart phones and other mobile technology, such as iPads, HP Slate, Asus eee tablet, and the Vega by ICD, businesses are finding and creating innovative ways to entice new customers to their stores through enhanced user experiences and reach out to a larger audience whilst enabling their current customers to purchase through alternative methods. For example French Connection, they have set up an innovative website– Youtique –This website has information and adverts for their latest products. At the end of the video you can click on a ‘buy’ button on the garments and this directs the user to the product page of that item on the French Connection website ready for you to choose size etc and purchase.

Mobile vs Desktop

It has been estimated by Morgan Stanley that in 2014 mobile internet users will have overtaken desktop internet users meaning that eCommerce is expanding rapidly and mobile uses of eCommerce will take over from desktop eCommerce as well as internet usage. This shows just how fast eCommerce is growing and how important it is for suppliers to keep their systems up to date and progressive.
