The project

In order to support their fast growing business, this travel and retail services company had a number of different systems running in tandem. A decision was taken to streamline operations and improve the way in which various departments related with one another,they looked at the possibility of having an integrated ERP system, which would also directly interface with their operational system – and hence continue to support their existing business. The implementation and customisation of a number of standard and bespoke Microsoft Dynamics AX modules in a phased fashion and as part of a six year development project would also greatly enhance the way the travel and retail services company conducts its business.

Established in 1919 as a local Lancashire coach firm, this travel and retail services company has grown and diversified to become a multi-million pound group of companies. Today, the company delivers a full spectrum of transport and passenger management and retail travel services. The company also offers specialist interior solutions for major hotels and has invested heavily in vehicle fleet, staff training and state-of-the-art systems giving them the resources to develop innovative new services to meet clients’ changing needs.

Background and Requirements

In January 2006, KPMG Crimsonwing were commissioned to provide a complete replacement of all their IT systems on Microsoft technology. This included:

  • A complete replacement of their operational system based on the .NET Architecture, then known as Ferrit Replacement Project (FRP) and now known as Beagle
  • A complete replacement of the administrative systems with the implementation of Dynamics AX modules.

We will focus on this last aspect.

The solution

KPMG Crimsonwing implemented and customised the following standard and bespoke Microsoft Dynamics AX modules for the organisation:

  • Financial Management
  • Customer Relationship Management (CRM)
  • Human Resource Management
  • Project Management
  • Payroll.

This gave the travel and retail services company the ability to collaborate effectively with customers, partners, employees and suppliers as they pursue new strategies and expand their capabilities.

Business benefits

In early 2007, the travel and retail services company went live with almost all of the modules. Considering the sheer scale of the system and the way the custom code interfaces with Beagle (their new operational system), it is as yet premature to state how successful the new system will be. However their Managing Director had this to say: “Your investment in IT is starting to pay off , your IT people have very high skill levels.” “We found very high technical skills here but what really attracted us here was the Maltese work ethic.
